When you are perhaps feeling most vulnerable, you are forced to make decisions that are costly and decisions that you feel will either honor or unintentionally disgrace the deceased.  Unfortunately, we also know that during this time, many funeral homes will take advantage of your vulnerability.  They will lead you to decisions based on grief rather than need by convincing you to purchase extremely expensive burial caskets and unnecessary add-on services.   

Below are 5 things you need to know before you make final arrangements for your loved one:

1.       Only buy the funeral arrangements that you want.  According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), you do not have to accept “package deals.”  You have the right to purchase goods such as caskets and services such as embalming separately. 

2.       Contact multiple funeral homes and get pricing over the phone.   Funeral Directors are required to give you pricing information over the phone, but you are NOT required to give them your name or any contact information. 

3.       When you visit a funeral home, be sure to obtain a price list of goods and services before discussing ANYTHNG with them. 

4.       A funeral home is a FOR-profit business.  Funeral homes make a substantial amount of money by marking up and adding on goods and services.  Funeral homes are in the business of sorrow; they make a lot of money off of tears.

5.       You can provide the funeral home with an urn or casket that you purchased elsewhere.  This includes online.  The funeral home must accept it, and they cannot require that you be there to receive it from the shipping company.  Additionally, they cannot charge you any additional fees for doing so.  They are not, however, required to store or warehouse your casket purchase.

If next-day shipping is not required, the casket will be delivered within ten (10) business days.
